Mais de 89 organizações de Estados-Membros da UE e organizações internacionais enviaram hoje uma carta ao Presidente da Comissão Europeia, Durão Barroso, apelando à Comissão para que publique o roteiro para a eliminação de subsídios ambientalmente adversos, prometido em 2006.

89 organizações signatárias do documento pedem a Durão Barroso para acabar com os subsídios prejudiciais ao ambiente.
(Lisboa, 17 Março de 2011) - 89 organizações europeias e internacionais, entre as quais o GEOTA, pediram ao presidente Barroso para honrar o compromisso da Comissão de acabar com os subsídios prejudiciais ao ambiente.
Em 2006, a UE comprometeu-se a definir um roteiro para a eliminação de subsídios prejudiciais ao ambiente até 2008. A Comissão Europeia reiterou esse compromisso em 2007. E em 2010 a Estratégia Europa 2020 sublinhou a necessidade de eliminar gradualmente os subsídios prejudiciais ao ambiente. Além disso, os chefes de Estado da UE e o Parlamento Europeu já apelaram repetidamente para que a Comissão publicasse o roteiro para a eliminação gradual dos subsídios prejudiciais ao ambiente.
"Estamos realmente preocupados porque a Comissão Europeia não está a desenvolver um roteiro para a supressão dos subsídios prejudiciais ao ambiente. A Comissão está simplesmente a ignorar os seus próprios compromissos e os pedidos tanto do Parlamento como do Conselho," disse Joanaz de Melo, Presidente do GEOTA: "É absurdo que nos dias de hoje os fundos públicos ainda estejam a ser usados para subsidiar atividades que são prejudiciais para o ambiente em que todos nós dependemos."
A reforma da Política Comum das Pescas e da Política Agrícola Comum estão a avançar sem qualquer análise clara dos efeitos ambientais dos subsídios atribuídos a esses setores.
"A UE está a reformar tanto a Política Comum das Pescas como a Política Agrícola Comum. Como podemos saber que essas duas políticas vão apoiar esses sectores de forma sustentável se não houver uma avaliação dos potenciais danos ambientais resultantes desses subsídios? "
O GEOTA está envolvido desde 2005 numa campanha nacional para a promoção da Reforma Fiscal Ambiental em vários setores económicos, tendo desenvolvido já um grande número de iniciativas junto da tutela para a alteração do sistema tarifário

89 organisations call on President Barroso to end environmentally harmful subsidies.
(Lisboa, March 17, 2011) – 89 European and international organisations have called on President Barroso to honour the Commission commitment to end environmentally harmful subsidies.
In 2006 the EU committed to defining a roadmap for the removal of environmentally damaging subsidies by 2008. The European Commission reiterated this commitment in 2007. And in 2010 the Europe 2020 Strategy stressed the need to phase out environmentally harmful subsidies. This is in addition to numerous calls by EU heads of state and the European Parliament for the phasing out of environmentally harmful subsidies.
“We are really concerned that the European Commission is failing to develop a roadmap for the abolishment of environmentally harmful subsidies. It is ignoring its own commitment and the requests of both the Parliament and Council.” said GEOTA’s organisation. “It is nonsensical that in this day and age public funds are still being used to subsidise activities that are damaging the environment on which we all depend.”
Reform of the Common Fisheries Policy and Common Agricultural Policy are advancing without any obvious analysis of the environmental effects of the massive subsidies handed out in these sectors.
“The EU is reforming both the Common Fisheries Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. How can we know these two policies will be supporting sustainable sectors if there is no assessment of the potential environmental harm of these subsidies?”
